Well, well! You learn something new every day. Didn’t think I’d learn so much Chinese in one day though! Met my hero Xia Yu, co-starring with me in my upcoming film “The DESIRE”, a superstar from China with no airs, was reserved at first but I actually discovered he had a great sense of humour as the shoot went on. Anyway coming back to how I learnt so much Chinese… I heard my hero correcting people pronouncing his name and every time someone called out his name, it invariably was wrong, the exact pronunciation being S(h)iya Yeoh!  which means “summer rain.” Sweet! The director addressed him as Sha Wu which meant “Afternoon”, Sha Yu, which meant “Oil” and many more interpretations with different christenings. Ha, ha! I dreaded calling out his name with the fear of getting it wrong. It was a funny sight till some people resigned to calling him “Sir!” (It was easier)

But he was too sweet, every time someone called out his name; he very patiently corrected it with a smile on his face. It was amazing to see his professionalism and dedication, despite not speaking the Hindi language he did try to make an effort to get comfortable with the surrounding with the help of Tracy (his English interpreter). For the first time I faced the camera with a foreign actor and that was a different experience. One thing that’s still constant is the fact that cinema understands the language of expression, so in the shot we understood each other perfectly well even if off camera we had to make an effort.

Shoot’s been hectic, a marathon schedule in Nasik after which we’ll move to Kuala Lumpur. Shaping up very well, very impressed with Sarath’s vision and his grasp of the medium is commendable. He’s slating to showcase it the Cannes Film festival so we working at break neck speed. For a change the international audiences will get to see more than just SLUMS, filth and an unhygienic environment and will see the deep rooted culture and beauty of India. It will be a film I’ll be proud of as an actor and as an Indian. Hopefully this will be received with as much gusto…

On that note will get back to practising Xia Yu’s name… have to get it right. Ha! Ha! Be good and a new announcement on the anvil, waiting to be broken. A couple of more days and the wait will be over.
Zai Jian – that’s goodbye, you know in which language! :)

Please don’t take indirect digs at other films(you know what I’m talking about) in order to promote your own one and attract new visitors (like me). I’m a big admirer of your’s since Big Brother and hope you don’t do this again.

  19. kaushikagrawal Says:

    Hey Shilpa,

Not to be too critical, but I don’t think there is anything wrong in showing SLUMS in our Bollywood movies. Slums in India, especially in “aamchi mumbai” is a reality. It is the first and last thing people see when they land @ Mumbai airport. Besides every movie has it’s own subject and roots. I have non-Indian friends who quite enjoy both kind of movies, if they are good. And I can confidently say that SLUMS are not the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear about India (maybe call centers…not slums…lol). But I am glad you are working on a project that shows a beautiful side of India. We should be proud of both kinds of cinematic heritage.

Btw, I loved your work in Phir Milenge and Metro…Keep up the good work. All the best.

    –Kaushik Agrawal.

  20. atyachaar Says:

Congrats on getting that stake in IPL. Rajasthan Royals are a real life underdog story, I think. Best of luck to you and your team at the IPL!
I still feel uploading some pics on this blog would do a lot of good. Hope to stay in touch

  21. Prasun Says:

So, u going to participate in nashik…great. well, u invested in rajasthan royals, great ….11millions…..best luck! wish u the best returns for it.

  22. advani Says:

I don’t know about you Shilpa but my friends and I enjoyed the slum movie very much. Isn’t the slums part of Mumbai, Shilpa?? What is so wrong in showing them in the movies? At least the international audience get to see the ‘real’ Mumbai.

I don’t know the actual numbers. India may have made several billion movies so far but has any of it truly stood out like the slum movie? What about any of your movies? Has it got any international recognition like the slum movie? Winning the Golden Globe Awards and being nominated for several Oscars is no easy feat, Shilpa. Be proud of it!

  23. ShannonLadd Says:

Hope your Chinese/Hindi film will be a huge success. Maybe you can teach that idiot buffoon Akshay Kumar how to make a watchable flick in collaboration with foreign actors, since he hasn’t a clue. Good luck always!
