JAI HO!
Shot a late night in Ahmedabad but still woke up at 9-30 am to catch the last bit of the Oscars. I jumped with joy when Resul Pookutty and A R Rahman’s name was announced and had a lump in my throat when I heard them render their speeches. They deserved it, India Deserved It. I felt finally our talented Indian technicians got their due. I loved the Film as an audience and felt it was great cinema, But as a Patriotic Indian maybe I always felt overprotective about how India was being perceived by the world. NO I am not in denial that the Slums do exist but there is so much more to India than just that. But even as I say all this, kudos to the director ‘Danny Boyle’ and co-director (Loveleen Tandan) who’s grasp on the medium made the film so entertaining and that needs to be applauded. I feel very proud of the fact that a film like this was churned out in India and has put us on the global map making it a golden letter day for Indian Cinema. Way to go.
Well back to shooting at the airport before I rush to catch a flight To Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. Its gonna be a manic schedule but what’s work without a bit of madness.
Signing out, lots of love and keep writing in.

Totally agree with your stance on Slumdog Millionaire, a good film, well made, deserved all the awards it received, but at the same time, we don’t want the West to think this is just what India is all about, and the general public only get to see India in these International films. Hopefully your film ‘The Desire’ will disperse the myth!

This movie was one of my absolute favorite films of this season…I showed India in a different light…than what we are used to seeing in Bollywood movies…But I believe it still showed exactly some of the things that make the Indian culture so unique and beautiful.

Dear Shilpa, Thanks for your latest blog. Just wondering if you feel sympathy & kinship with Freida Pinto? Remember when you brought India & Bollywood to the world’s attention , got respect and adoration in the West, but were insulted by Indian media? Same thing is happening with Freida. It is both sad and disgusting. Best of good fortune to you(and to her).

I think the “so much more” part of India that you mention is already covered in our Bollywood movies to death and many times the things portrayed in so many movies don’t even relate to anything in India. Someone needed to show the other side of India where the grass is not that green! Of course, there are some of our directors who come up with those kind of movies as well which are usually pushed to the side as “low budget movies” and go unnoticed.
Even now, after over 6 decades of independence, the “white man” has to come in to make a change. But I know “make a change” is simply wishful thinking considering the many factors prevailing (which I do not wish to go into detail) in India.
But it was the first time I watched the oscars with actual goosebumps!!
Wish you all the best Shilpa. I just read somewhere that you criticized Slumdog Millionaire and that’s what guided me here but that piece of new obviously was an exaggeration. If you think this post is long, you should have seen me write if there was anything insulting against the Indian Oscar winners here
just kidding.
