New York

In New York, this place used to be my favorite holiday (shopping) destination every June for 3 weeks, and now it’s been 2 and a half years since I came here! Had some really fun times, landing here made me nostalgic :) Anyway yesterday went into getting over my Jetlag and figuring out what to wear, considering I was in for a shock when I realized upon opening my bag, I had left my kurta back in Bombay, so half my day went into planning and coordinating how the outfit could reach me in time, trying to figure out who I could catch to get the outfit in from Bombay, I HAD to wear an Indian outfit since it was an Indian occasion! We managed to get it in the nick of time with a stewardess who flew in with it, an hour before the event, phew!

Attended a press conference in the midst of this pandemonium… Anyway my day started early, because today is the India Day Parade. I must say I had underestimated it, thought there would be a few thousand people, but this was the mother of all Parades, nearly 70000 people were out on the streets to show solidarity to their motherland. WOW! Was overwhelmed by the response. Quite wonderful to see and felt like I was still in India :) Appreciated the fact that Mayor Bloomberg and the FIA who keep the Indian culture alive made it possible for this event to happen… Madison Avenue was cordoned off, that’s no mean feat!! Felt proud to represent the South East Asian community in America. It was heartwarming to see that even though Indians have migrated abroad, they still are very Indian at heart. Still wanting to stay in touch with their roots. It was nearly 35 degrees and one of the hottest days but the warmth of the people kept me going. On that note Jai Hind to all you patriotic Indians from this proud Indian. Tired now, will write soon, crashing out now. Take care :) zzzz

    hey shilpa,

Thnk you very much for updating everything abt you. recently i heard shahrukh khan was stopped at an airport in U.S, have you ever undergone such situation in U.S, sometime it feels sad, becoz, indians are been questioned, but, sometimes for the safety of the people, i guess it should be done, I think US should consider evrybdy as the same, rather than only questioning shahrukh,, becoz he has a khan in the surname,,, looking forward so tht any kapoors and raj surname gets questioned, then it would be better, atleast it would make sure tht racism is not there..

anywayz have a nice time in newyork,

thnk u for updating everything abt you..

    regards,
    antony mathew

Hi.I am new to your blog. I appreciate your efforts to find time in between your busy schedule to update your well wishers. I am a great fan of yours right from Baazigar days; but in terms of watching your movies and reading all articles about you in newspapers. Out of all the other current actresses in Bollywood these days, you are the only one whom I have some respect for.

After reading the first paragraph of your blog, I felt to comment on something silly. As you have mentioned that New York is one of your favorite shopping destination, you must be aware and familiar with the places where you can buy best Indian outfits in New York. Is it for seeking media attention (esp on tabloids in Metros with a heading - ‘Shilpa’s million dollar kurta!’) that you had to get a kurta back from Mumbai when it was easier to purchase a new one from New York? Sounded silly to me. Or, have you left behind all your credit cards too in Mumbai?

Hope you did not had to go through the same experience as SRK since you are not promoting the movie ‘My Name is Khan’ by any means… :) I feel that this blog is a good way to know you as an individual. Keep up the good work both in movies as well as in this blog. We are proud to have a personality like you in our country. Take care.

However, Tarun Tahiliani’s Mughal kurta - churidar sleeves embroidered with jewel motifs was looking great on you! Worth the effort of getting it all the way from India! :)
