Health is Wealth!

May 14, 2010 - 12:27 pm

Helloooo all ! On the flight back to mumbai after my much needed Break.
All perky and happy ready to take on the world.
Most holidays are like indulgences but this one was like an “investment”..
for my future well-being. A deeper insight and guide to wellness. The Six
Senses Destination Spa Resort has NO room service, No tv and No phone
calls at meals concept..but has everything u would want for Fun and Peace.
From kayaking to cooking (healthy) to nutritional guidance, acupuncture..
they had it all.I also learnt to swim (float) considering I have only drowned
everytime I tried! This was good ha ha.
It was an amalgam  of Nutritional appreciation, stress management, spiritual
well being and being environment friendly. A very interesting concept
especially  for our generation considering we all are so addicted to JUNK
food and carbonated drinks (luckily not me but my husband used to be)!
This place was a different world, a set menu of 3 meals only( breakfast,
lunch, dinner) consisted of organic fresh vegetables and seafood no meat,
I enjoyed it and I’m a pucca non vegetarian !
Don’t know why.. but when we hear “Healthy” we think Non Tasty! (These
meals weren’t!) Its People who don’t know better and cause our minds are
conditioned that way. We only want the easy way out, readymade food,
fast food..its also hampering our system fast! Once we have an open
mind and value our health the change will happen automatically.
Seeing is believing and you u can only see the change only IF you try :)
Strangely I’ve always been a foodie and a health freak (irony but true) so
this just introduced me to a new world of taste and self revelation when
it came to food. I had no idea that I would feel this good with this new
diet. They say “You are what u eat” so true.. I just believe we all need to
make a start somewhere and now is the time..we have to start living healthy
and spread the word..cause that’s the best thing you could  do for somebody
you care about. I am not saying lead a prosaic  boring life and don’t enjoy
your food. Just make small amends..
Same food lesser oil, don’t overcook food, avoid red meats, avoid  fizzy
drinks and fast food..to name a few (Will give a tip every week). Its so
important to lead life with a bit of discipline, Go wild once a week, that’s
how I do it..eat and drink all that you want guilt free (the junk food included
if u must :) I think that’s fair! What say? !
Wanted to share my experience with you all, just wishing I could  be a  catalyst
in bringing about an awareness to a Lifestyle change  as this trip has made to my life..
Relaxation + Discipline = Detox, that’s what I had..
Came back Rejuvenated and enriched for life.
Okay enough for today, hope this wasn’t too boring, meant it
though cause I care for u all  :) Going to plunge into work as soon as I reach..
4hr flight, going to catch a  movie now..
Lotsa pyaar, positivity and prayers

    Hi Shilpa,

I happened to land to your website this evening hopping from one link to the other. Firstly I would like to congratulate you for your marriage and all the success. I am from delhi and work in an online media agency in the capital city. Since I am a first time visitor on your website, I will share my thoughts on the look and feel of your website. I think you could have made the home page of your website a little better. Since I am also in this domain, I know that your website is based on Wordpress. The flash used on the Home page is a little difficult for the user as it has 84 pics and would only increase. So if you would put a scroller on the thumbnails, it would make it more user friendly. I like the clean look of the website. Navigating through the website I landed on your Blog, and now I do not find a way to go back to the home page of your website. So i would suggest if you could have a link to the Home page of your website, it would ideally be great.

Last but not the least, you are a role model for many young women in the world. I wish you all the luck for your future. May you rise and shine :)

    Regards,
    Moumita

  7. kanwal81 Says:

I am a big advocate of you are what you eat. Unfortunately, as you stated people usually do not care about their health unless something tragic happens. We live in a society where work and money dominate our own health. However, people do not realize that if we do not take care of ourselves with proper nutrition then we will not be able to succeed in life. Hectic lifestyles has brought the fast food nation to take over our countries. Not only this, but people hardly find the time to give themselves a proper workout or just walk/move more. Obesity is now at its highest and for the first time the average life span is being shortened. This should be enough to scare people and have them eat fresh food and move more. Cooking healthy meals can be very quick and very cost friendly. I say this from my own experience of weight loss and gaining a healthy lifestyle! Many of my nutritional recipes are posted on my blog as well: http://ask-kanwal.blogspot.com. Please do not go towards process foods for snacks, instead bring an apple, orange or yogurt. Get some greens in every meal! If you want to succeed in life, start by taking care of yourself. If you do not feed yourself right, then you are working towards an early death.

  10. tanusree Says:

    Dear Shilpa,

hope this comment finds you well as mentioned in your article itself. When i was reading your tweets from your holiday spa,i was visualizing that how good it could be and it is something i always long for.Hopefully i will visit that place one day insha allah in life.I myself is a fitness lover and love food too.Being foodie,i give credit to my ethnicity-being bengali you eat various types of fish and the sinful ‘rice’.i have had a lazy phase in life from 2006-2008 and due to lack of exercise and not checking what i am eating i gained a few pounds in those years but since 1.5 years,i’m again back to fitness and try to eat all right. But i have found great similarity between our habits which is i am not/never into junk foods,i never found those fizzy drinks tasty, the only time i ever drank sprite/cocacola was when i had biryani but now i don’t do that also.I am not into chocolates, ice creams or even any fast foods.I give credit to myself for this because this comes totally naturally to me,i don’;t need to force myself for not eating/drinking these items that i mentioned.

I have to mention here that i’m no admirer of SIZE ZERO rather i truly admire a curvy and healthy body for a woman.I once heard you saying in an interview that ’size zero is unhealthy’.It is indeed an dit doesn’t look good also in my eyes. How would i express in words how much i appreciate the flexibility you have in your body and how greatly shaped you are as always.Hence,my motto is to ‘remain healthy and fit’,to have the energy to all those things i want to do in life, look fresh even when i’m 50(between i’m still in the decade of 20’s).And your this trip and learning even inspires me more to do so:)

Since you have come up with your yoga DVD,i was so inspired by it and do yoga and pilates regularly now along with weight training and cardio.I divide my weekly work-out regime between yoga, pilates, body pump, zumba dance and body combat/attack.And the result is showing already, at least that’s what my family and friends says.

I am NOBODY but still loved and wanted to share my way of living with you and the reason i did is to have more inputs(what u called ‘tips’ in ur article) from you on regular basis so that i can have better life ahead. Its a fact that i’m no celebrity, therefore wouldn’t be able to afford any luxury to maintain health but i do invest a decent amount on work-out attires, healthy food and gym every month. It would be only HELPFUL to have your suggestions.

    Thanking you,
    Always healthy,
    Tanusree,London

Nice read! Couldn’t agree with you more.

The pamphlet of the wise reads diet and exercise. Avoidance is not as hard as we think it to be. We know how to avoid a nagging aquaintance, don’t we? We can apply it to junk food too. Like it’s said - “If you say you can or cannot, you are probably right”.

  17. mayank Says:

We all certainly have a big problem of mismanagement when it comes to our Health. We want ourselves to engage in eating habits that lead us to Doctors as we think just like our Wealth Manager at Bank, we have Doctors as our Health Managers. The biggest misconception that we all carry, for Doctors can advice and not make you do it. Unless the self realization for Health Management set in our core existence, we would be careless like hell. I have been practicing certain basic stuff and have been able to stay away from Doctors for what seems like ages now. i do not even remember when I had my last medicine prescribed to me. As already mentioned in your blog, discipline in Food Habits is the Key to Healthy self.

One thing that I would like highlight is to ensure that we have 4 to 5 liters of water per day (at the minimum) and the day should start with half a liter of water rather than the bed tea or coffee. I have been doing this from almost the time I remember it. Get up in the morning and have half a liter of water, move around the house doing sundry things for next 20 to 30 minutes (do not start your daily chorus or exercises) and then start the daily chorus, freshen up and all. It is very important to NOT have anything like tea or coffee in that period. The water that you intake cleans up your stomach and intestinal region.

Another thing that I followed is to shift to liquid diet when I have a feeling that I might have a fever or may be stomach irregularity or other ailment. Indeed our body does give us the indications and we just need to know when the body is telling us. A shift from regular food to Liquid diet helps control the ailment.

More importantly it in wise to know how much calories to intake and how much proteins. It depends on the BMI like for someone weighing 115 pounds, 35 years of age, 5′11″ height exercising daily for 30 mins, and to maintain the given weight, nutritional balance required is - 249 grams of carbohydrates, 65.7 grams of fat, and 99.6 grams of protein per day for 2174 calories.

    Shilpa's Reply:

Very impressed with the way you live life proud of you and even I have a
lesson to learn from you. Yes discipline is the key wordd so keep it up.

So nice of you to share your wonderful experience with us. I totally agree with you where in you have mentioned relaxation + discipline = detox. I think this can be applied to our everyday life as well. We all keep on struggling with the challenges of life and forget that life in itself is so wonderful and can enhance if we maintain the right balance of physical and mental health.

Your tips about diet are really good. I believe most of us know about them but need regualr reminders from icons like you to follow it. DISCIPLINE is the magic word and a touch of it to our everyday habits can make our life more enjoyable and energized.

I salute your perseverance to maintain good health, healthy lifestyle and a life having a lot of life…

    Hello Shilpa…. :)
Thanks for writing such a wonderful & informative blog. It shows how much you care for us. “Best 5 comments”, I don’t know whether mine will be 1 of 5. But for sure affect of your healthy blog on me will result in one better life. And this result will surely be 1 of “best 5 results” after your blog. You deserve all appreciations for putting your valuable time in writing it, real justice and meaningful appreciation for your valuable effort will be if all reading it will convert information to knowledge and make good habits part of our life which will help us living a healthy and a better life.
I promise not from tomorrow but from today I will put sincere effort in making my life healthier. I always felt more than mouth it is our eyes which push us to eat junk food. Now time to use my brain more than my eyes. It will be a real shame if I fail to keep my promise. I am very determined this time, I hope I will start and maintain this good habit and then your sincere effort will be paid off. Then I hope I will change life of people I care about, you started it, I will follow it, let the chain grow. Yes “your valuable words” will spread.
Getting emotional without any reason. I should say your blog is more than words, action speaks louder than words. My action will and credit goes to your words which are not just words. “Health is Wealth” Indeed! :)
Lots of Love, Prayers, Wish you more Happiness & Good Health. :)

Health , wealth , produce ( Agricultural produce / Food ), happiness and security …. these five the learned say are the ornaments of a polity . To an extent , all the five are interrelated / interdependent and abundance of one can aid in enhancing the others whereas deficiency of any may impact the remaining . Proper food intake is undoubtedly of immense importance and it has been aptly said that if the ploughmen keep their hands folded then even the sages claiming renunciation cannot find salvation .

    Heyy SS,

I must say nice blog. Reminds me of my favourite phrase, ‘respect your body and it will reflect back on your personality’. It’s very important for all of us to know and understand the importance of health. I am glad you are promoting it. Indian food has variety in it however it’s the choice that really helps/spoils ones diet. We need to spend enough time reading and understanding our eating habits. Having said that here are my few tips that I have got from some of the best dieticiens and nutritionists in the world.

Break your meals into smaller portions. Eat atleast 5-6 meals with limited quantity.
Your food should contain more of proteins and fiber, less of fat and carbs.mind most of Indian cuisine are opposite of this.
make sure you spend atleast 30 mins a day on some kind of physical exercise.
Avoid canned/bottled juices, carbonated drinks. Consume more fruits and fresh juices made from fruits directly.
Sleep is as important as diet/nutrition, so sleep atleast 8 hours a day.
If vegetarian, eat lots of vegetables(salad), greens, sprouts, etc
if non vegetarian, eat more fish, shrimp, chicken.
Ragi which is found in South India is best possible grain and can make any person healthy.
Last but not the least “the myth about healthy diet not being tasty is absolutely FALSE, the tastiest dishes on this earth can be made with a healthy recipe”. So people out there givings reasons…. STOP giving reasons and START your healthy life NOW!
